June 10, 2015, Cairo – The Master of Arts program in journalism and mass communication at The
American University in Cairo (AUC) has ranked first in Africa, according to Eduniversal, a global
ranking and rating agency specializing in higher education headquartered in Paris. Eduniversal
has recently published its master’s rankings for the 2014 – 2015 academic year, based on a global
survey of 5,000 international recruiters, 800,000 students and over 10,000 representatives from
1,000 academic institutions in 154 countries. Each year this ranking evaluates more than 12,000
postgraduate programs and it is the only ranking that evaluates individual masters programs
worldwide in 30 fields of study.
“We are very happy and proud of this ranking. I have been teaching for 20 years in the Department
of Journalism and Mass communications and I feel like I have been rewarded for a life-time
commitment,” said Naila Hamdy, head of the Department of Journalism and Mass
Communications, “Our MA program is a very special program, although we teach in English but
the research we do and the multicultural caliber of students we have, makes us stand out.” Hamdy
added that what is special about the program is how it provides an American quality education but
based in the heart of the Middle East.”
According to Hamdy, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication has enjoyed a
reputation for excellence since its inception; its alumni count among the most influential among the
region’s journalists, media professionals and media scholars. “Guided by our faculty of leading
experts, researchers, and journalists, and a curriculum which offers hands-on, multi-disciplinary
training in mass media, our three majors are perfectly positioned to deal with the evolving socio-
political structures in Egypt and beyond.” The three majors include Multimedia Journalism,
Communication and Media Arts and Marketing Communications.
The MA program in Journalism and Mass Communication is designed to provide intellectual
growth and advanced training for persons already engaged in mass media or public information
work. It is a balanced program focusing on academic and theoretical instruction while immersing
students in substantial graduate-level professional journalism and media courses that enhance
their communication skills. As media transits in Egypt and across the region, the industry has
diversified as media values and professionalism standards continue to evolve. Graduates have the
opportunity to observe changes and challenges first hand and through their research,
presentations and publications, produce valuable media studies.
The Eduniversal rankings include all types of master’s programs that are either nationally or
internationally associated with 30 different specializations. The ranking of the top master’s
programs was determined according to the reputation of the program, career prospects and salary
level of the first cohort after graduation, as well as the level of satisfaction among students.
