- Almost 500 maritime workers greeted with gifts for International Day of the Seafarer at SOHAR
- Nearly 90% of the world’s goods trade is imported via ship
- This year’s event aims to entice young people to consider a career at sea
SOHAR Port and Freezone joined the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in celebrating the 5th annual International Day of the Seafarer (25 June), on Thursday. The annual event was launched in 2010 by The IMO to give thanks to seafarers for their contribution to society.
Almost 500 maritime workers were greeted with goodies upon arrival into the port on Thursday. Crews across visiting ships and service boats were given a bag full of personalised gifts from SOHAR.
International Day of the Seafarer recognises the contribution made by maritime workers to our everyday lives. Almost 90 per cent of the world’s goods trade is imported via ship, seafarers are not only responsible for operating the ships, but are also responsible for the safe and smooth delivery of cargo.
The work done by seafarers is invaluable and the day aims to not only thank them, but also to build awareness around the issues affecting their work and lives, such as piracy. It calls on governments to develop policies that lead to fair treatment of seafarers at ports and encourages private ship companies and owners to provide employees with proper facilities whilst they are at sea.
This year’s theme focuses on maritime education with the IMO encouraging people to consider a career at sea, it showcases how the multi-faceted maritime world offers a number of exciting and unique career opportunities for young people, both at sea and ashore.
