The new Salalah Airport, which commenced its operations last June 15, 2015, is an expansive infrastructure project that features state-of-the-art technology with the chief objective of improving air traffic movement, provide greater connectivity throughout the region and facilitate easier access to Salalah, especially to the Dhofar region. The opening coincides with the ‘Khareef’ season in anticipation of the large influx of visitors who will arrive for the busiest tourist season in the region.
The new airport showcases a modern architectural façade and an immense passenger terminal spread out over 65,000 square meters. Inside, visitors are provided with an efficient information systems centre, luggage handling units, and service utilities including 24 check-in desks, 4 self-service check-in desks and 8 tubes to competently assist passengers in their ascent to and descent from the planes. The terminal also features a wide variety of retail shops, restaurants and other services for the travelers’ convenience. Additionally, it offers a VIP lounge, as well as a car parking area capable of accommodating 1957 vehicles with slots for VIP and taxi parking.

In its first stage, the airport is designed to accommodate 2 million passengers annually; it will be enhanced to welcome as much as 6 million passengers in the near future. In anticipation of Khareef, Oman Air will operate 284 flights between Muscat and Salalah which is an 11 per cent increase in the number of flights compared to 2014. This will allow the transfer of 352,738 passengers between the two cities.
Overall, the new Salalah airport will receive 28 international flights, which will also be doubled during the Khareef season, and 56 domestic flights in a week which sums up to 84 flights per week to the newly established airport. Salalah will also receive a number of international flights from Doha, Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi through Qatar Airways, Fly Dubai, Rotana Airlines, and Arabia Airlines.

حظي "مطار صلالة"الجديد، الذي بدأ عملياته التشغيلية في 15يونيو الجاري، بإهتمام لافت وإشادة واسعة بإعتباره إضافة هامة لجهود تطوير البنية التحتية السياحية في سلطنة عُمان. ويتميز المطار الجديد بتطبيق أحدث التقنيات المتطوّرة ومطابقة أعلى المعايير العالمية في إدارة المطارات الدولية، ما يعزز دوره الفاعل في تحسين حركة النقل الجوي وتعزيز ارتباط صلالة بأبرز المدن الرئيسية في منطقة الخليج العربي والعالم، فضلاً عن تسهيل الوصول المباشر إلى محافظة ظفار. ويأتي افتتاح المطار الجديد بالتزامن مع موسم الخريف الذي يكتسب أهمية خاصة كونه يستقطب أعداد كبيرة من الزوار والسياح إلى صلالة التي تحتفي بمهرجان الخريف سنويا، وتعتبر الاحتفالية السياحية الأبرز والأكثر جذباً للسياح على المستوى الإقليمي.
ويتميز المطار الجديد بتصاميم معمارية عصرية ومحطة ركاب ممتدة على مساحة تتجاوز 65,000ألف متر مربع. ويحظى زوّار المطار بفرصة التمتع بخدمات عالية المستوى، في ظل وجود مركز متطور لنظم المعلومات ووحدات مناولة الأمتعة ومرافق الخدمات التي تشتمل على 28 مناضد أنهاء إجراءات السفر والخدمة الذاتيةو8جسور متحركة لتسهيل حركة نزول وصعود الركاب من وإلى الطائرات. ويضم المطار الجديد أيضاً سلسلة واسعة من منافذ التجزئة والمطاعم والمرافق الحيوية التي من شأنها توفير الراحة للمسافرين، أبرزها ردهة كبار الشخصيات ومواقف السيارات القادرة على استيعاب 1957مركبة متضمّنةً مساحات مخصصة لمواقف كبار الشخصيات وسيارات الأجرة.
ويكتسب مهرجان خريف صلالة وغيره من الفعاليات السياحية الرائدة أهمية خاصة باعتباره دفعة قوية للجهود الرامية إلى تفعيل مساهمة قطاع السياحة والسفر في الناتج المحلي الإجمالي لسلطنة عُمان وتعزيز التدفق السياحي إلى المنطقة. ويمثل المطار الجديد إضافة هامة لقطاع السياحة المحلي، لا سيّما وأنه مصمّم وفق أعلى المعايير العالمية ومجهّز بأحدث التقنيات وأرقى المرافق الحيوية التي من شأنها ضمان تحقيق راحة وسلامة ورضا المسافرين. وتسعى
السلطنة من خلال "مطار صلالة الجديد"إلى ترسيخ مكانتها كوجهة سياحية رائدة في منطقة الخليج العربي والعالم.
وتم تصميم "مطار صلالة"الجديد في المرحلة الأولى لاستيعاب 2مليون مسافر سنوياً، على أن تتم مواصلة أعمال التوسعة والتحسين لضمان جاهزيته لاستقبال 6مليون مسافر في المستقبل القريب. وبالتزامن مع انطلاق موسم الخريف، يستعد "الطيران العماني"لتشغيل 284رحلة جوية بين مسقط وصلالة، بزيادة تقدر بــ 11% في عدد الرحلات الجوية مقارنة بالعام الماضي، في خطوة هامة من شأنها نقل 352,738مسافر بين المدينتين.
ومن المقرر أن يستقبل "مطار صلالة"الجديد 28رحلة جوية دولية، ستتضاعف خلال موسم الخريف، و56رحلة جوية محلية أسبوعياً ليصل إجمالي الرحلات الجوية الأسبوعية إلى 84رحلة. كما تربط الرحلات الجوية الدولية من صلالة بعدد من العواصم والمدن الرئيسية في منطقة الخليج العربي مثل الدوحة والشارقة ودبي وأبوظبي عبر "الخطوط الجوية القطرية"و"فلاي دبي"و"روتانا للطيران"و"العربية للطيران".
