The Omani government’s Vision 2020 plan aims to increase its room count to 20,000 rooms by 2015 and welcome 12 million visitors annually by 2020, an increase well above 2,184,000 visitors in 2013. To achieve its goal the government has been investing in tourism under its 2011-2015 plan to bring infrastructure and services up to par with upgrades of road infrastructure and airports as well as the development of Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre with a 3,200-seat auditorium set to open in 2016. Large sums are being spent to boost visitors to the Sultanate, such as $6.1 billion into the expansion of its international airports. Muscat International Airport’s new terminal will be able to handle 12 million passengers when it opens next year, with plans to expand annual capacity to 48 million passengers. To meet the growing demand the number of hotel rooms in the Muscat governorate could reach between 5,000 and 6,000 by 2015, ranging from three- to five-stars. The ministry of tourism forecasts 3,000 rooms to open by end of 2014. The World Travel & Tourism Council expects the tourism sector to contribute 9.9 per cent by 2019 to the Sultanate’s gross domestic product, up from 6.7 per cent in 2009.

بدأ العد التنازلي لإفتتاح فندق وشقق كورال مسقط مع دخول الفندق المرحلة النهائية في البناء. وفي إعلانه النبأ في مسقط، قال لوران أ. فوافنيل المدير التنفيذي أتش ام أتش – القابضة لإدارة الفنادق (هوسبيتاليتي مانجمانت هولدينجز) إن: "فندق وشقق كورال مسقط هو الفندق الذي يرفع علم أتش أم أتش وهو في سبيله إلى استقبال ضيوفه الأوائل خلال الربع السنوي الثالث من عام 2014. نحن في غاية السعادة برؤية التقدم في الموقع ونتوقع أن ترتفع علامة كورال قريبا".

إن رؤية حكومة عمان في خطتها حتى عام 2020 تهدف إلى مضاعفة عدد غرف الفنادق بها إلى 20000 غرفة عام 2015 واستقبال 12 مليون زائر سنويا بحلول عام 2020، وهي زيادة أكبر بشكل ملحوظ من 2184000 زائر عام 2013. ومن أجل تحقيق هدفها فإن الحكومة تستثمر في السياحة في اطار خطتها الخمسية 2011 – 2015 لتعزيز البنية التحتية والخدمات جنبا إلى جنب مع تحسين الطرق والمطارات وتطوير مركز عمان الدولي للمؤتمرات والمعارض بإضافة قاعة ضخمة تسع 3200 مقعد من المنتظر أن تفتتح عام 2016. وقد تم إنفاق مبالغ ضخمة لرفع أعداد الزائرين إلى السلطنة، مثل انفاق 6.1 بليون دولار في التوسع في مطاراتها الدولية. المبني الجديد في مطار مسقط الدولي سوف يتمكن من استقبال 12 مليون مسافر عند افتتاحه في العام القادم، مع خطط لزيادة طاقته السنوية إلى 48 مليون مسافر.
ومن أجل تلبية الطلب المتزايد فإن عدد غرف الفنادق في محافظة مسقط قد يتراوح بين 5000 و6000 غرفة عام 2015، تتراوح بين ثلاث وخمس نجوم. وتتوقع وزارة السياحة افتتاح 3000 غرفة بنهاية 2014. كما يتوقع مجلس السفر والسياحة العالمي أن يساهم قطاع السياحة بنسبة 9.9 % عام 2019 في اجمالي الناتج المحلي للسلطنة، مقابل 6.7% عام 2009.
